Stocks to Watch Friday, Oct. 16: CoreWeave, Verastem, OPKO Health, Better Home & Finance, Alaunos

By Tech & Money Press | Pre-market watchlist for Friday, October 16, 2026

Market Setup

Thursday was a session of two halves. Tech opened sharply lower on renewed AI-spending and data-center debt worries, after another hot inflation print (September PPI came in at 6.3% year over year versus 5.5% expected, on top of Wednesday’s above-forecast CPI). Then long-term Treasury yields posted their biggest one-day drop in more than a year, and money rotated into value, defensives and small caps. The Dow finished up more than 1%, the S&P 500 snapped its losing streak, and the Nasdaq erased its early losses to close slightly higher.

Rate-hike odds for the Fed meeting in about two weeks remain the big macro overhang. Before Friday’s open, M&T Bank (MTB), Regions Financial (RF), Citizens Financial (CFG), Truist (TFC) and Travelers (TRV) report earnings, so watch the regional banks and financials early.

1. CoreWeave (CRWV) — Biggest reversal of the day

Close: $69.69 (+5.9%) | Day range: $59.51 – $69.76 | Volume: ~130.5M (about 2.6x its 10-day average) | After hours: ~$68.10

CoreWeave was down sharply early on AI-debt fears, tagged a new 52-week low at $59.51, then ripped back to close almost exactly at the high of the day. Coverage pointed to two drivers: a public show of support from Nvidia and the sharp drop in Treasury yields, which matters for a company that leans heavily on borrowed money.

Our Take: A close at the high after a flush to new lows is a classic reversal candle, but one day doesn’t fix the debt story. We’re watching whether it can hold above Thursday’s close and push through $70. Losing the mid-$60s would suggest Thursday was just a relief bounce. The after-hours dip toward $68 is worth keeping in mind.

2. Verastem (VSTM) — Strong after the offering

Close: $9.23 (+19.7%) | Day range: $7.77 – $9.73 | Volume: ~17M | 52-week high: $10.82

On Wednesday, Verastem released updated data for its oral KRAS G12D inhibitor VS-7375, including a 50% confirmed response rate in second-line metastatic pancreatic cancer at the 900 mg dose. It also priced a $250 million offering at $8.00 per share (expected to close around Oct. 15) and named a new CEO starting in January. RBC raised its price target to $19.

Our Take: It’s a good sign when a stock trades well above a fresh offering price right away. The $8.00 offering price is the key support level. $9.73 (Thursday’s high) and then the $10.82 52-week high are the levels to watch on the upside.

3. OPKO Health (OPK) — Asset sale to Labcorp

Close: $1.61 (+17.5%) | Day range: $1.48 – $1.70 | Volume: ~55.5M (about 6.5x its 10-day average) | After hours: ~$1.64 | 52-week high: $1.75

Labcorp agreed to acquire select BioReference Health laboratory assets for $722 million in cash. OPKO gapped up at the open, faded to $1.48, and recovered into the close.

Our Take: This is a cash-raising deal with a real dollar figure behind it, and volume confirmed the interest. The stock is pressing against its 52-week high of $1.75. A clean break above $1.70–$1.75 would open blue sky on the yearly chart, while a move back under $1.48 would mean the gap is failing.

4. Better Home & Finance (BETR) — Rate-sensitive momentum

Close: $10.76 (+32.5%) | Day range: $8.05 – $11.37 | Volume: ~3.4M | After hours: ~$10.85

The digital mortgage lender ran from its open at the low of the day to close near the high. We didn’t find a single new headline for Thursday’s move. The backdrop includes the sharp drop in long-term yields (Rocket Companies rose 5.1% too), plus Tuesday’s preliminary Q3 update from returning founder Vishal Garg: a $64.2 million annualized cost-cut plan and a $30 million buyback that was set to start this week. The float is small, so moves can be fast in both directions.

Our Take: This is a low-float, high-volatility name, so treat it with caution. If it can hold above $10 early, Thursday’s high of $11.37 is the next test. If yields bounce back, the rate-sensitive trade could reverse quickly.

5. Alaunos Therapeutics (TCRT) — After-hours squeeze

Regular close: $2.18 (+5.3%) | After hours: ~$2.85 (+30.7%), high $3.09 | After-hours volume: ~7.2M

Alaunos jumped late Thursday. Earlier this week (Oct. 13) the stock more than doubled after it closed the acquisition of Velaris Therapeutics, a pulmonary arterial hypertension company, alongside a roughly $350 million Fairmount-led private placement. A 13D/A ownership filing was also posted Oct. 15. We couldn’t confirm a specific new headline behind the after-hours move.

Our Take: This is the most speculative name on the list. The after-hours high of $3.09 is the first level that matters, and the Oct. 13–14 spike highs ($4.32 and $4.40) sit above it. After-hours moves without a clear catalyst can fade at the open, so we’d wait for pre-market volume and price action to confirm.

Also on the Radar

  • Nike (NKE): +5.2% to $37.14 on above-average volume, leading the Dow.
  • Regional banks (MTB, RF, CFG, TFC) and Travelers (TRV): Earnings before the bell could set the tone for financials.
  • Nvidia (NVDA) and Intel (INTC): Both closed lower (-1.8% and -2.8%) even as the market recovered. Watch whether chips join the rebound.
